I think this is the right thread but anyway I lifted £100 out of a cash machine and because I'm moving house right now I just forgot to lift the cash so I ran back out the shop after about 20 seconds and the money was away. I phoned Halifax and they are investigating the claim but I want to know if someone stole the money what should I do? Will Halifax give me the money back as a good gesture? Is it a police issue and do all cash machines have CCTV around them?

Ask the shop if they have a camera on it and see if the person is known. Will Halifax give me the money back as a good gesture?
UnlikelyIs it a police issue and do all cash machines have CCTV around them?
It will be a very very low level crime as far as police are concerned. Almost certainly no investigation and reliant on total luck. That is unless the person was stupid enough to use the machine after doing it.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Your money is gone forever unless the person concerned hands it back to the bank or shop. Are you sure the money was taken, however? If the money remains in the slot it will eventually be taken back into the machine. If the latter is the case, then the Bank will have your money already.
I love the way this thread has been placed in the mortgage fee re-claiming forum!:)0 -
It might well have retracted back into the machine, in which case it will either credit itself back to your account or the investigation will turn it up.
If not then there is little you can do.urs sinserly,

This is the most likely thing to have happened, mine came out of the machine, I was fiddling trying to get my purse open, for seconds and I actually saw it being retracted back into the machine. It didn't show on my account for over 24 hours.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Thanks for the help. I wasn't sure what forum to write in. Surely it theft though? So the police better do something.0

So the police better do something.
I love optimists!
Unless there was CCTV coverage of the machine and a good photographic image of the thief was obtained or the theft of the money was witnessed by someone who saw the thief and can give a good description of him/her, there will be little the boys in blue can do, other than issue a Crime Reference Number.
And a CRN is only useful if you have a "losing cash" cover on your household insurance which doesn't have an excess. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
What can the Police do? Did you see the "criminal" take your money? Even CCTV will only show any person following you to the ATM and then withdrawing money. How can anyone show it was your money?Surely it theft though? So the police better do something.
Your only hope of refund is that the money was simply withdrawn back into the machine.0 -
I think you may have to put this down to an expensive life lesson learned!
