Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause...

I have looked through existing threads on this topic but have not been able to sort it. Wondering if anyone can offer any assistance please?

My partners Dell Inspiron N5050, model number 5050-0705 laptop has the above message. I have tried f8- the only options are 'safe mode' (doesn't do anything), 'safe mode with networking', 'safe mode with command prompt', 'enable boot logging', 'enable low resolution video', 'last known good configuration', 'directory services restore mode', 'debugging mode', 'disable automatic restart on system failure', 'disable driver signature enforcement' and 'start windows normally'.
Partner has thrown box away and we cannot find any discs. I have a HP laptop which is fine. I tried burning a Windows system repair disc on that and running it on the Dell-unsurprisingly it has made no difference.
Doing a 'system restore' would be fine, but I can't generate that option.
I have run out of ideas.
On start up I have a black screen with white type giving the options of 'launching startup repair' (just reverts back to this screen when chosen)or 'start window normally'
(tries to start but then reverts back to original options screen).
Any assistance very much appreciated.
Dawn.

The stop code & parameters would help.

    STOP: 0x0******* (0x********)... etc

Where would I find those please?
  • when you power on can you acsess the boot menu? if you can then you can select to boot from CD and restore that way?

Have you tried "last known good config"? What happens??

    On the Blue screen.

EDIT: Re-read OP. Press F8 and choose 'disable automatic restart on system failure' Then reboot.

It tries to start Windows-shimmery coloured squares- then theres a flash of blue screen (a millisecond) then it goes back to the black screen/white type screen with the 2 options 'launch startup repair' or 'start windows manually' -back to square one.
    Cannot access 'boot'menu.

Thankyou-I have got a blue screen with 'Stop c000021a(fatal system error)The verification of a known DLL failed. System processes terminated unexpectedly with the status of 0xc000012f (0x002213do 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

Have restarted and back to the original balck and white screen with the same 2 options launch startup repair (just goes back to original screen) and start windows normally (tries to start-shimmery coloured square), but then once again reverts to the black and white screen-as above.
  • Go into setup when booting up (usually F2 key). Set 1st boot device as CD then reboot (save changes) and boot off the windows cd and reload that way.

Thankyou, but it won't let me 'set boot priority'-it's an option, but I cannot highlight it. My list says: 1st boot priority-diskette drive, 2nd BP-Hard drive, 3rd BP-USB Storage device, 4th BP-CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive, 5th BP-Network. At the top of the list is set boot priority, but as I said, I cannot select it. If I just click on CD-nothing happens.

You need to use the up/down arrows, PG up etc, to scroll through the options. If you read the instructions on the side of the screen it'll tell you how to change the options.
