I use Avast for my anti virus protection, but recently downloaded AVG just to run it as a double-check.

AVG found 3 threats..... but failed to remove or quaranteen them. I've tried selecting each one, with a view to clicking 'remove', but the 'remove' button does not highlight or work.

Is this
* a failure of AVG?
* my failure to use the software correctly?
* something to do with the specific virus type?
* something else?

For info, I copy the AVG threats here:

"";"The file is signed with a broken digital signature, issued by: Google Inc., C:\Program Files\AVAST

"";"Inline hook win32k.sys EngSetPointerTag+0x190 -> 0xFFFFF95F80251312, <unknown>";"Infected"

"";"Inline hook win32k.sys EngFntCacheLookUp+0x12D24 -> 0xFFFFF95F8013EB61, <unknown>";"Infected"

    Did you remove Avast TOTALLY before installing AVG. If not you'll have each anti-virus reacting to the other one producing all sorts of false reports

    If so then run the AVG Remover and the Avast Remover then reinstall ONE of them

    I don't think you need to uninstall other AV products -- you just need to ensure that only one AV is scanning at a time. The "live scanning" feature is referred to as a "shield" in Avira, and a "guard module" in other AVs.

    Also, I remember on a friend's PC that there was some kind of malware that modified requests for particular files and inserted malicious file versions on the fly. AVG reported that there was a problem with the original files themselves, but there wasn't. Only Avast identified the malware files that were intercepting requests for the original files and modifying them.

    It might be worth scanning with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware too:

    Thanks. No, I didn't remove or uninstall Avast, though I did 'temporarily disable' while running AVG. Might try uninstalling.

    Malwarebytes (+ Superantispyware & Spybot) installed and run periodically.

    Temporarily disabling Avast isn't enough, it needs to be removed, or Just remove AVG.

    The first AVG detection (Broken digitial signature) isn't anything to be concerned with.

    The next two (inline hooks) can't be trusted because of the installation of Avast. having two AV's installed will cause conflicts - especially with ARK scans. It's most likely they're nothing to be concerned with too.

    If you want a second opinion to your installed AV, use an online scan.

    Ran eset and it found no problems.

    Think I'll rest easy and go back to Avast.

    Thanks all.
