An unusual, curious family outing is The Cheapside Hoard at the Museum of London, co-sponsored by Gemfields. The exhibition tells the story of an extraordinary and beautiful trove of C16th and C17th treasure that was buried in a cellar on Cheapside during the English Civil War and only discovered by pick-axe wielding workmen in 1912. Five hundred pieces of brightly coloured enamel and gemstones include a parrot carved from emerald, cameos featuring Elizabeth I and Cleopatra, a pearl cage pendant and a large Columbian emerald hollowed out to receive a watch. The exhibit investigates the questions of who exactly the treasure belonged to and why on earth they'd stashed it? Mysterious, fascinating and annoyingly unanswerable.

And for those whose curiosity is piqued by the precious green stone that's twenty times more rare than diamond, Emerald written by Joanna Hardy, Hettie Judah, Jonathan Self and with a preface by Italian Vogue editor Franca Sozzani is published this month. With photographs by Bert Stern and Horst P Horst and mischievous tales about Jackie O, Daisy Fellowes, Wallis Simpson and their baubles - this too could be an answer to avoiding a ruck. Keep your nose stuck in this weighty tome and ignore the familial rumpus.

The Cheapside Hoard: London's Lost Jewels - until 27th April 2014
