We bought the 65p mince pies today they were very nice and you could pass them off as from the local craft bakers easily.
    ..

Then you must have some pretty bad craft bakers in your locality.
  • We used to shop regularly in Tesco. We now have a Lidl and an Aldi within 5 minutes walk. The shopping list for Tesco has got shorter and shorter as they put the prices up further and further, I now only shop in Tesco for things I can't get in Lidl or Aldi or for things I have vouchers for or occasionally work out cheaper.

Personally I would much prefer to take a five minute walk and grab what I need rather than fight my way round a massive Tesco and end up taking 2 hours over my shopping hence finding my mood gradually sinking.

I am not a scrooge, simply a savvy shopper who can't see the point of paying more for less fresh veg or things of an equal of lower quality than I can get locally.

lidl has the best fruit and veg,and is second to none in my eyes.having used wait rose and sainsburys for years,my shop load has more than halved at these stores, preferring lidl and aldi.

Sainsbos is just too expensive for fruit and veg that isn't even ready to eat. So for me its the fruit stall first, then top up from Lidl.

I have shopped in Aldi and Lidl since they opened around here. With 6 of us I do alot of cooking and baking from scratch and they provide brilliant, high quality but cheap ingredients to cook with.

Why would you pay more for lower quality stuff. I know some people go on about the value brands, but to me the quality is so low its not worth saving a few pence and in the last year or so the price of the so called value brands has crept up to the point where there is little or no savings.

A classic example would be tinned tomatoes or passata the aldi/lidl prices are the same or cheaper than the "value" brands, but taste like the finest products, or at least much thicker and tastier than the big supermarket versions.

I also prefer the lack of a million choices and confusing prices, I have a maths a-level and can work out the unit prices no problem, but who has the time to stand and work it out for every bit of shopping on your list, not to mention the way prices go up and down in the big stores. Being able to get in and out of the store quickly makes a huge difference to me, I really don't have time to spend hours shopping.

Mind you think I have the best bargain turkey for our dinner, its still currently running around a field at a local smallholding. OH is doing a day of plucking tomorrow in return for the bird, which is a free range norfolk black cross :).

Okay, I'm going to turn the tide on this one. I looked at this Thursdays special buys and was pretty astounded at the prices charged for their "Specially Selected" sprouts and red cabbage dishes (£3.49 and £2.99 / 600g). How "special" can a sprout be? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Abel and Cole has 400g organic brussels sprouts for 1.89 and organic brussels sprouts on a stalk for 2.49 which just goes to show that organic isn't always as expensive as people think !

Lidl organic is great, I just wish they did more of it. There's definitely a place in my heart for Lidl :)

I'm planning an Aldi trip tomorrow morning to get some snacky bits for Christmas. I went a couple of years ago but felt like I had spent £30 and not really got a proper shop comparable to what I could get in Morrisons. I am going to take (geek alert) my Tesco delivery receipt with me so I can compare prices and see if Aldi would genuinely work out cheaper for me. At the moment working part time with a toddler I am finding it time saving to get my shopping delivered each week.
  • Borokat, if you go on to mysupermarket.com you can compare the basket between Tesco and Aldi now without going into the store. Save yourself a journey.
