How do they do it so cheaply?

Many people are food snobs and they won't shop there so those of us who enjoy great food but love saving money are laughing.

Nothing wrong with either Lidl or Aldi in my opinion and I can afford to shop anywhere I don't feel I am going down market at all.

Ive shopped in aldi for years now and even though I shop more in home bargains these days I think its a fantastic shop, its products are decent quality, Id much rather buy something from aldi than a lot of the basics range at other supermarkets. I cant afford to shop at Tesco and my local aldi is about a 20 min walk from my home and home bargains is directly next door. Makes food shopping really easy for me.

My local aldi is always busy.
  • We had the specially selected (or whatever it is called) pork sausages from Aldi last night, 6 for £1.99 and we can honestly say they were the nicest sausages we have had in a long time.
With something like 82% pork, the quality is unquestionable.

I tried the lobster two years ago. While its nice to eat there is not much meat. Your need to buy a few of them.
  • Our Aldi opened in 1992 and I started off buying mainly cleaning stuff and toiletries there, then going across the road to Sainsbury's for food. Obviously my list for Sainsbury's then was a much bigger list than my Aldi one. Over the years, as Aldi extended it's food range, I started buying more food there and less in Sainsbury's. It's now got to the stage where the only items I go to Sainsbury's for are Vivaldi potatoes, Vittoria tomatoes and Twinings Liquorice tea!!

Over the years we have witnessed a massive rise in the number (and class!!) of people shopping there. At one time I could be in and out with my shopping in minutes but now I have to queue! I bumped into a relative in there last week and she appeared to be embarrassed to be caught shopping there, explaining she had just called in to see what it was like!

Anyway, to answer the question I am definitely in the Scrooge category!

i am definitely in the scrooge category as well. I regularly shopped in Waitrose and M&S but now shop in Aldi more and more.

I used to spend a lot on groceries every week but now spend about half what I used to spend, OH has even said a number of time how nice things are and where did I get them. I think he expected me to say they were expensive but they have been bought at Aldi.

I have bought my mince pies, Christmas pud, snacky bits like nuts & crisps etc at Aldi this year. I am doing duck breasts at Christmas and got these frozen at Lidl as every other year they have been great and are massive think they were £5ish each.

I will however be checking to see if Aldi have any meat reduced to 50% off on Christmas Eve such as the goose I got last year before I take the duck breasts out to defrost.

We are however tempted by the fresh 3 bird roast at Aldi that is £20

Aldi and Lidl have definitely lost their "cheap and inferior" tag - in much the same way as Skoda has. I don't think that will change as the economy recovers.

Great cheap food, no long queues, air con, good staff .... Lidl ti I die! I shop wherever the bargains are but I find a Lidl shop to be stress free.

Lots of tricks in the food trade, like "family butcher".
And selling different grades of food when the nutritional data is the same.

WE went to Aldi this morning and saw one of our poshest friends there, she was on her first visit and she was already pleasantly surprised at the price and quality of the veg.. We bought the 65p mince pies today they were very nice and you could pass them off as from the local craft bakers easily.

I haven't been to Asda Tesco or Sainsburys this week at all..
