Lost sound on pc ...again

Not being totally used to the new pc, windows 8 I'm stuck as to what to do, being a technophobe doesn't help either.
It happened as few weeks ago but came back without intervention, but after the 8.1 update it has gone again.
I didn't notice straight away as I had been using a laptop (Win7, no problem there)

I have checked what I can and it tells me it is working.....but its not
the problem seems to be with Realtek, I have made a note of the following -

Realtek Audio Manager
Audion Drive Version 6.0.1.6844 (it said drivers were up to date)
DirectX Version DirectX 11.0
Audio Controller HD Audio
Audio Codec ALC662
Language Auto

can anyone advise me in a nice simple (like me) way, I'll check back to see if anyone has stopped laughing:rotfl:

thank you:o

I'll start with the simple question. How have you connected the speakers to the pc? Are you sure you have plugged them into the right socket?

Secondly, is the volume turned up? I don't just mean any physical controls on the speakers, but the controls in the operating system. I have never used win 8, but previous versions had a volume control on the task bar (shaped like a little speaker).

I should have mentioned that it is an all-in-one pc, so there isn't any outside speakers, sorry for that omission.
yes speaker logo currently showing 53%!! I put it that high so that wouldn't miss should it miraculously come back
  • I just had another look and discovered some new updates for windows 8.1 dated today so i have just installed them and lo and behold......the sound is back, how long for.....I'll wait and see

thanks frugal_mike, for prompting me to have another look around, they weren't there earlier, and i did get blasted with sound:T:T
  • ever so briefly just after the windows updates I had found (around 7pm today) i had sound, once again it is absent

I just don't know why, I logged out and turned off the pc just after my last post......and once again it's struck dumb

any help would be really appreciated

Check the mute and volume settings again-it may be setting them down each time you reboot.
    Recheck in Device Manager.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I can't see any changes and as far as I'm aware other than lowering the volume (when i had it) I haven't changed anything......
