Advice needed for old debt and default

Hi there. About 12 years ago I got myself into debt. However I spent 10 years paying it all back through a debt management company. Whilst not for everyone it worked for me and I settled everything in full. Around 6 months before I settled DMA informed me that one of my debts with the co-op had been closed as the co-op couldn't accept payments as they had no information for the account any more.
This summer a debt company contacted me stating I owed £261 to the co-op. I asked if they could supply me with account numbers or statements to ensure that it was in fact my debt and it was owed. They informed me 3 months later they had no information as the co-op had no information due to the debt being sold to a debt. I stated that although I had the money to pay it I wasn't prepared to part with my money until they could show me some sort if paper trail. I also stressed that I didn't want this to affect my credit file - they assured me they would look in to it and it wouldn't go on to file.
Yesterday I received a letter from the co-op stating they had now got the debt back and due to the age of the debt they would be informing the credit agencies of my default and would continue to do so until I paid in full...... They still don't have any details? I am unsure as to what to do, good credit file is essential to me and I can't believe I may have another 6 years to go with this on my file

Firstly, the debt will only stay on your file for 6 years after the initial default. If you have correspondence relating to what you told the DCA, it should help your cause for the Coop not to put anything on your file while they provide you with information to prove the debt. You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'0
