Insurance for Care Home Residents

Hi I'm new to this forum and I hope someone out there can help me.
My Mum has just moved into a nursing home and I am finding it hard to get contents insurance. I get asked questions about the building (subsidence etc) that I cannot answer and the value of the possessions is quite low.

Has anyone had this problem or does anyone know where I can get a policy?

Thank you

If the value of the posessions are quite low do you actually need insurance?

If your mum's previous the property is already insured then there may be limited cover for contents in a nursing home. If the home is now unoccupied you need to tell the insurer.

If there is no previous buildings cover ie rented property you don't really need to worry about subsidence. If you just want contents cover most mainstream insurers will offer (but may have endorsements).
  • Thank you both for your replies.
I did consider not getting insurance. However my Mum does has some things of monetary value plus the Home does not cover, for example, the television and cd player for damage.

My Mums old home insurer is AgeUk who I thought would have a simple policy to cover room contents.

Thanks Scarlet the old property is covered for a short period, long enough for me to clear it and hand over the keys.

With the ageing population and the number of Care Homes being built I just thought that there would be a specific policy to cover this situation.

Problem is so many staff members and other residents will have access to the room so the risk would be very high.

Premium could match the value of the items you wish to cover.

Accidental damage probably not worth the cost. If a staff member damaged it are they not liable. Would your insurance cover that?
