Overseas: want to close UK bank account

Hi All,
I'm overseas and had left a UK bank account open with Santander, with a DD to pay off an outstanding debt. I checked in with them the other day and was told that the payment had been rejected a few days previously as there were not enough funds (I was still in credit though) and a £25 charge would be added. I said I would credit the account with the necessary funds, wait for the DD to go through again close the account and provide different acct d!tails to the creditor. I asked if Santantander could waive the fee as they hadn't actually paid the DD and I hadn't become overdrawn, I really can't see where they spent the £25. They said no!
Any advice? I'd like to close this account and avoid the fee!
Many thanks in advance.
Best regards,
M.

If they said no, then you can't avoid.
Why do you want to close it? All banks charge for bounced DDs.0 -

Hence the charge levied.
You'll need to contact the DD originator to settle the debt. DD's aren't claimed automatically again.0
