Rabbit insurance

Okay I know there is a pet insurance sticky discussion, but having searched that, the questions about rabbit insurance tend to get swamped by the very nature of them being fairly rare pets in comparison to dogs and cat. So I thought I'd start my own thread, hope no-one minds. If you do, Mods please feel free to merge this.

So as you (may) know I have two mini-lop rabbits. (Buck is at least 15 weeks old, doe is at least 17 weeks old.) I'm in the process of looking into getting him castrated, and as part of this I'm now looking at getting them insured. We were fortunate with our last rabbit, whilst he did have some vet needs they were costs we could afford.

So I've done a quick search on petplan and it's coming up with a policy of around £10-11 a month for just the buck, I assume the doe would be similar. I don't want to scrimp on this. I want them to be covered for all eventualities and for life. (We were robbed short with our last rabbit, he was only with us for 4 amazing years - I'm hoping we get closer to 10 with our current buns). I thought I'd come and ask you for your advice. Are petplan any good? Who are your buns insured with? Anything else I should consider?

Thanks!

  • Can't comment on experiences with Bunnie's I'm afraid BUT I can say I've found Pet Plan absolutely excellent

Smudge had kidney problems from the age of 2 and they paid out for his treatment, fairly and quickly for the remainder of his life

Have you any pics of your Bunnies, I'd love to see them

(I would love to have some but unfortunately Maisie is a predatory chaser so it just wouldn't be a good idea)

    sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet :)
  • I've always self insured. My current bunny is 6.5years old and I've spent £214 on vets bills. Insurance at £10 pm would have cost me £780.

    But its personal choice.

I think you have a point Charlie. Looking at Petplan they only pay out up to £2000 a year. Well push come to shove we could afford that sort of money anyway.
  • *sigh* mrs drink - they are just absolutely scrumptious! :D

He's going through a tough time at the moment, he is a slave to his hormones at the moment. He isn't spraying (thank god) but he is obsessed with trying to get to her and is stamping his feet lots. Bless him. Got him booked in on Wednesday to see if the vet thinks he's ready for neutering. His testicles have descended and haven't retracted while I've been looking this last week so I have my fingers crossed. But he is still very small physically.
