    The USB cable that comes with the Western Digital drive is different in that it has a slim flat Micro Type-B connector to the drive which has a notch in it (the one on the left) ... my Seagate external USB3 drives use the same cable. As has been said, the computer end of the cable (the one on the right) looks like a standard USB connection except it has the blue plastic to denote it's USB3.


    The OP did start by stating his computer had USB3 on the back, so hopefully ........

    Thanks all - got it now.

    Shame my USB 3 cable isn't long enough to plug into the rear of my desktop and be of sufficient length to put the external HDD somewhere useful. No doubt you can buy longer leads!
