Currys Infinity Leasing - Get out?

Desperate for some advice please people. My girlfriend was bought a Ipad 2 from Currys (bought being questionable) just short of 2 years ago by her ex-husband. He told her that he's also signed her up to a insurance and support policy whereby she pays a set fee by direct debit which covers her for loss, damage etc etc. At the time she trusted this man enough to think he'd done the right thing and is first to admit she should have looked into it more.
She received a letter a couple of weeks back stating that its time to change her Tablet. When she has enquired about this it turns out that her ex-husband had signed her up this Infinity Leasing plan governed by Rentsmart. She had unknowngly been paying £30 a month to rent the Tablet. When her and her husband broke up she took control of the join account (the one used for this direct debit) and so all teh responsibility that went with it. She has been given the 3 options now that her 2 year deal is nearing the end.
Option 1 - Renew, upgrade and get the cash back
Option 2 - Continue the lease
Option 3 - Return and walk away

My girlfriend wanting an easy life was going to just walk away and choose option 3 however I am much more stubborn and personally don't agree with paying £800 ish for somethign that you never own.

We are no longer in contact with her ex-husband and the lease is actually adressed to her married name which has now changed.

Does anyone know if we have a leg to stand on with getting something good from this terible deal? I'd accept her just keeping the Ipad and dropping teh paymenst. At least then she has somethign to show for teh £800 she has wasted.

  • I'm interested to see how you get on as I was also conned into this deal for a laptop, I was told that I could just keep the laptop after 2 years for no further payments, I now believe this to be not true. My deal ends in the summer.
We are not alone on this, this is as big a con since the PPI scandals.

I really don't understand what you are moaning about. This is just like renting a TV which was popular in the 70s and 80s.

If you don't want to hand it back you should expect them to pursue you. If you have passed the minimum period then just hand it back and cancel the deal.

Did he sign the initial deal or did she? If it was him, as it appears, then he is the leaseholder and she has been paying for and using his rented tablet.

Presumably the deal can be terminated.

Her married name is still legally binding and after 2 years it's a bit late to complain now. Whether you like it or not therer is nothing you can do about it, pick one of the options or in this case hand it back and be finished with it.

Stubborn or not what you want is irrelevent you cant just keep it, it is what it is.

Last week my husband and I found out from a letter that we received from Curry's Infinity, asking if we want to upgrade, renew or return our 2 tablets. We wouldn't have signed up for it had we known at start!!! We were told at sales time after 2years they would be ours IF we didn't want to upgrade after the 2 years as hubby asked sales guy before sales. We have paid £1,104 for these 2 tablets over a 2 year period to be told these are not ours!! WHAT A SCAM THESE SALES-PEOPLE TELL YOU IN ORDER TO BUY YOU INTO IT!!!! These are due to be picked up on Wed with a delivery guy, what are our rights as a consumer as I feel that they SHOULD BE OURS AFTER paying ALL that money for these?!!

It's not a scam, it helps a lot if you actually read what you sign.

That font and the size couple with some words in capitals is just horrendous.

I don't think that the contracts are in size 18 Comic sans though, so it's understandable
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
    Now 20% cooler

What does it say in the paperwork you signed?
