iPad problem

Asking on behalf of a friend..

Bought an iPad around 6 months ago, everything has been fine then he did a software update and now it won't charge.

What options does he have? He has been told by someone that he can take it to an apple store for it to be sent of to be fixed or be given a replacement BUT that the replacement will not be a new one it will be used, is this correct?

Can he refuse a used one? Is there anything else he can do? Can he not return to the store he purchased from? The nearest Apple store is over 35 miles away so a bit of a trip.

the Apple store will know a few tricks to try before they replace

may be a new unit or a full refurb unit by apple and will come with the remainder of their warranty

Check the obvious things first ... is your friend using the correct charger? An iPad will take forever to charge using an iPhone charger (and the screen will warn 'not charging'), and the two chargers look very similar. I got caught with this a few times until I did a web search. Two iPhones, two iPads, four chargers, use whatever is nearest, kind of thing.

From what I have been told, if he/she gets a refurb unit from Apple it will be indistinguishable from new. Anything that needs replacing gets replaced, the drive is wiped clean, and it comes with the remainer of the warranty. In fact, it may well be a better unit than the one that was returned.

  • Thank you for the replies, it is the charger that came with the iPad. So does he have to take it direct to Apple or can he take it to the store he purchased it from?

  • He can take it to the store he purchased from but it may take less time to get it fixed with Apple. I think I read in this forum that you can return a faulty phone by post. Phone Apple and see if that's the case.
