Problem with Sony DVD Recorder - file error

I recorded a programme last night but found that only half of the programme recorded and I cannot play or delete it. I have not had any problems with my machine and have also recorded programmes today with no problem.
The message that I am getting is: 'Read error cannot play this file format'.
I am not worried that I cannot watch the programme but want to know if there is any way that I can delete it as it is wasting space on the hard drive. I have tried switch the recorder off and leaving it but I still cannot delete the programme (it tries to delete but appears to get stuck as you then have to switch the entire machine off at the mains to get rid of the delete menu).
Any suggestions would be great as the Sony online support is of no use and I cannot find this problem listed online. Thanks!
