Could I refuse KFH tenancy renewal and remain in the property?

Greetings all,
I would just like to call on the the expertise of these forums if possible...
KFH have started hassling us about renewing our AST which expires at the end of March, but I want to know:
Would it be possible to refuse to renew the contract and still stay at the premises on a monthly rolling basis?
I know that KFH want to get their bogus renewal fee and tie us down for another 12 months, but we don't want to be tied down and we really don't know what will happen if we say "no thanks, we don't need another contract because we've already got one."
Many thanks in advance,
Tom

Perfectly acceptable.
Our previous agency did the same to us, basically threatening us saying that they need to know whether we will sign so that they could re-market the property. Not knowing any better, we reluctantly signed another AST. Afterwards we found out that they were doing the same to the landlord too and he also didn't want to sign it (as he intended on selling the property and didn't really want to pay the agents fees).0 -

Yes. Statute allows you to move to a Statutory Periodic Tenancy. They may threaten you with a S21.
I suggest you speak directly to your landlord and find out what he wants or intends.0 -
Thanks for the responses..
Jamie - What is an S21...? I am typing an email to my landlord as we speak, he is a good landlord and we share a mutual dislike of estate agents so I hope he'd understand.0 -
A Section 21 notice is a no fault notice from your landlord telling you that he will require the house/property to be vacated in two tenancy periods,
It is not a notice to quit nor a notice to leave on that date, it merely allows the landlord to start possession proceedings if you remain in the property. There are two types, one for a fixed period and another for a periodic tenancy.
A S21 can only be validly served if the landlord has protected your deposit and served you the prescribed information within 30 days of receiving it.0
