While in hospital my husband was very bored _pale_ with nothing to do.I was thinking in getting him a portable dvd player as I have loads of stuff off the tv copied also some films downloaded off internet. As these films have been decoded and play on my cheap dvd home player will they play on any portable player (do I need one with DIVX) as they couldnt play on my expensive dvd recorder. Is there anything I need to look out for oh and can they plug into mains if battery goes down.

Hi there,
There are portable dvd players availble that have divx decoders built in them, which means you will be able to play what you are intending to play. I know there is one from toshiba, the Toshiba SD-P1880 which is quite expensive http://www.google.co.uk/product_url?q=http://www.pixmania.com/uk/uk/259500/art/toshiba/sd-p1880-portable-dvd-pla.html%3Fsrcid%3D867&fr=AGbRSEFIp2vYQoaCq94m52Aqm1Vl2CgQ9oS-u9YrgV-jjaNEgvBgG3QAAAAAAAAAAA&gl=uk&hl=en
But you get other branded ones too, one from hyundai

Philips

Umax
http://www.bigpockets.co.uk/product.php?product=PLA0038
And this cheapest one i found on froogle happens to be multi region too, but non famous branded though

And they do come with batteries to charge up and have power supplies too

Hi!
I'm not sure if you are referring to pirated material, if so this thread ain't going to last very long. :-) A lot of video downloadable from the internet is in divx format, so I'm a bit confused as to how it plays on your home player if you don't know whether it plays divx (divx players you normally have to make a point of buying the things as divx playback is not a standard facility.) What player is it and what software do you use to write the DVD?
Anyway I've been keeping an eye out for a portable DVD player that will play DIVX but I'd like freeview on it and (ideally) a 10" screen. These only appear to be available on ebay. (about £130 seems to be the going rate.) For smaller screens and less facilities then the price goes down.
I believe www.ebuyer.com recently had an offer for a 7" dvd / divx player for £59.99. These things generally can be mains powered as well as getting power from the car or their own battery. Also it's worth keeping an eye on the argos forum as they sometimes have offers for this sort of kit.
I hope that helps

thank you all,I use a silvercrest dvd player I bought from LIDL,cheap but does the job, everything I throw at it.I use VSO to burn downloaded stuff onto disc, and no problems there, just needed to know if a portable player would play the stuff I recorded off tv or the discs I made from internet.0
