can't tell which gas meter is mine

I live in a block of flats and our electricity meters are indoors but the gas meters are all outside together. I can't tell which is mine! The landlady pointed to one which has a pipe entering the wall underneath one of our windows, but does that guarantee its the right one? We've lived here for a six months and our gas bill is higher than expected - which makes me wonder if we are paying the bill for the wrong flat.

There's a serial number on your bill that should match the one on the meter. I'd identify that, then take meter readings from all meters and use NO gas at all for 24 hours ... then run out and check again. The others should have moved on, yours should still say the same reading. Job done. Then I'd get a label and stick it on to ensure nobody else is confused in future.

Your bill should have the meter serial number printed on it.

Turn off the one you were told it is - see if your gas stops. Simples!

Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
  • they are very sensitive and will move straight away..
just turn your hob/oven/boiler on and see which one is moving...

But if it isn't, and your neighbour had a gas appliance running, you've just potentially extinguished it-and then turned the gas back on.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

True, but the thermocouple will stop any escape of gas.

Could have the gas oven/hob or old style gas fire on. Not a good idea to turn someone elses gas meter off and on. Just check the 10ths or 100 ths going round
