Charges on standing order

Hi all,

My partner and I have been renting a house, with our rent set up to transfer from our easy cash account, to the landlords account on the 7th of the month, as a standing order.
A few months ago the we were around £5 short, due to an unexpected bill, and therefore made a manual payment from the account once the landlord contacted us.
Since then, as soon as money goes into the account, our rent money's being transfered immediately, as i assume the account is still looking for the standing order from the previous month (obviously not knowing that we've made a manual payment)

My partner and i have only just realised that we have been recieving charges for failed standing orders, despite the landlord recieving his money on time.

My partner spoke briefly with the bank, but they advised they still intend on charging us.

I am going to visit the bank tomorrow, and was looking for any advice... or if anyone has been in a similar situation, what the best approach to take is?

Thanks for reading.

The Standing Order is under your control exclusively. If you had no funds and they try to process it, then they charge you for the failure. As long as it is shown on the bank price list, it is allowed. Like DD's if you are living close to the edge, automated payments are never a good idea.

As to your issue, explain, and as goodwill they may reverse the charge - but this is usually only ever done once.
  • Cancel the standing order and set up a faster payment to your landlord.
You will have to log into your internet banking to do the payment but at least you can check whether the available balance is there or not.

If this is not to your liking then cancel the original standing order and re- set it up again. This would stop the bank attempting to send the original one.

Finally if this happens again then put the money into the bank - then the S/O would get paid albeit a day or so late.
