Bank details to shop

Hi
A local shop which sell second hand clothes on your behalf and pays a percentage of profit from the sales into your bank account requires my bank sort code and bank account number to do this.
If I give them the details are they able to take money from my account and is it safe to give them the bank account details?

The only way they could take money is if they set up a direct debit on it (assuming they are a DD originator already). If they did this then you would be protected by the DD Guarantee and your bank would have to refund any money taken without permission in a very short time.0

Don't forget that if you ever send a cheque to someone, they also have your sort code and account number as its written on the bottom of the cheque.0

Good suggestion by opinions4u, and to expand slightly on it, you can confirm whether a DD can be set up or not by entering the sortcode into a checker such as this one
http://www.paymentscouncil.org.uk/resources_and_publications/sort_code_checker/
which will tell you what functions that sortcode allows.0 -
Good info many thanks. Will check out that web site.0
