It was going to add about £700 to add my daughter to my policy. And that is about the same as it would cost her to insure her own car fully comp. So she bought a car and insured it herself (with me as a named driver). This way she is building up her own no claims discount, and there is no risk to my car or policy.

It was a no brainer as she had the money to buy a car.

She is very lucky to get insurance cover for £700. Most probably you live somewhere out in the country where there isn't a lot of traffic.

In the city a young driver could be looking at £4K+ to cover on their own policy.

I live in an urban area about 35 miles from the centre of London. The quotes she received ranged from £700 to over £7000.

35 miles is well outside the m25 band, so you live in an urban area ooutsideof lLondon?

Yes, but it's still not a rural area

There would be a distinct difference in cost between a young learner and a young driver who has already passed their test. I quite like the idea of them getting a full licence with a years NCD already in the bag.

Insurance is quite reasonable for learner drivers, its when they pass their test that the noughts get added to the quotes.
