    What's the car?

The switch itself shouldn't be more than £30 - £40 even if it;;s one of the stupid odern "replace all switches together" units.

Regardless of what the dealer has said, most of the switches simply clip into place - no need to remove the panel at all.

Even if you do need to remove the panel, it's not more than an hour's work on any car I've ever seen, usually more like 5 - 15 minutes off and about the same to put back once you know where the screws / clips are - which a dealer should know.

Unless KF have managed to lose the wiring inside the door...

It was hanging on by a thread but had not actually come off. I wonder now why he had actually touched it at all.

He touched it to open the window, perhaps to aid his parking in the bay.
You knew it was wonky and new to handle it carefully, did you tell the mechanic to be wary about using it? He used it without being aware it had to be handled carefully.

Search on Google for the owners club for your make and model and get someone there to advise you how to fit an Ebay bought switch yourself.

Probably would cost that from a dealer, but as said, a tenth of that off of ebay or scrappy. Not a hugely skilful job, you should be able to change it in half an hour by yourself.
How did it break in the first place?

Agreed about the price, and the likely working time, but was working on a worst case basis seeing as the OP may not be happy hunting breakers (many motorists aren't) and I can only base the time on similar jobs I've done before, with an allowance for "it's not me doing it" ;)

Looking at Mazda 6 stuff, it looks like they use a 4-way switch block which is screwed in from the back of a trim panel. But it also looks like the trim panels are simply clipped into the door.

Most likely is that the "book" approach is to remove the whole door panel and unscrew the switch (at completely OTT labour rates) rather than take the slight risk of marking the trim panel by unclipping from the front.

Fair enough in a way when you're working on new cars, but certainly not the most realistic way to do it - and likely not what they'd actually do even if that's what they charged for!

Sorry, let me make this clear. Before I took it into the garage it was working well with no problem. After the garage it was hanging off. When I took it back it was after the visit to the garage.

I think your right it is a four way switch. Thanks for the instructions.
