VAT on car repairs

Hi All

I'm currently registered as self employed with HMRC and voluntarily VAT registered. (all my business is with companies)

I just use the 45p/mile for my travel and I understand that this covers maintenence (I claim VAT on the fuel element) , but I've just had a heafty £2.5k bill for a gearbox.

My question is can I reclaim the VAT on this bill?

TIA

As far as I know you cannot claim any other expenses for your car when you claim 45p/mile. If you want to claim back the VAT on the gearbox you have to change to accounting for all expenses on your car (petrol/insurance/maintenance etc) and dividing it between business and personal use.
