Real-life MMD: Should my replacement on theatre trip contribute to ticket cost?

  • If you didn't make it clear I don't think you can ask for money now. The friend may have thought they were just making sure it didn't go to waste, not necessarily covering your costs.

Most theatres don't allow you to return tickets and those that do (like the Royal Opera House)l will usually only reimburse you if they can sell the ticket on, so you were going to be out of pocket regardless unless it was a really hot ticket that people were so desperate to go to that they'd go alone in your single seat.

Personally I would have offered you at least a gesture towards the ticket, but if it wasn't explicitly agreed at the start I don't think you can ask for it now I'm afraid.
  • Very late to the party, but TBH if they weren't planning to go to the theatre in the first place there is probably a reason for that.

    For Example:

I like the theatre but there are other things that give me more joy for the money and my entertainment budget is small, so I'd happily take a ticket that would otherwise go to waste, but if someone offered to sell me one, unless the price was crazy-low I wouldn't buy it.

If the reason I wasn't going was because I was broke, I'd be delighted at someone telling me there was a free ticket. But wouldn't have bought one because it was unaffordable.

In either scenario I wouldn't be happy being asked to pay for it because if the cost was worth it to me, I'd already have bought a ticket.

I would of course have said thank you and been grateful, but I doubt I'd agree to pay for it.
