SA Calc Says, Nonexistant Student Loan is Due

in Cutting tax
Hi, I'm doing Husband's Self Assessment and I've entered NO where it asks about Student Loans, at the bottom of the 'Tell us about you' page.
When I get to the 'View Your Calculation' page, I see this:
Total tax, Class 4 NIC and Student loan due for 2012-13...."£100"
Where have I gone wrong? or is this line standard/generic/whatever?
Also, for the first time they've taken the: "£100" and added a further "£50" and are asking for it to be paid in two amounts. Why is this? have I gone over some threshold?
I only have a little brain and like to box it off in one go, I'm going to be really confused with split payments etc.
Any help gratefully received.

The tax, Class 4 NIC and Student Loan due is 2012/13 is £100, of which zero is attributable to Student Loans - it is that simple!
Can you state exactly what it says on the other point?0 -
Thanks for the reply, Nomunnofun, unfortunately it may be simple to you but not to me. The "£100" was just for illustration so let's forget that.
Back to original question, why does the sentence:
Total tax, Class 4 NIC and Student loan due for 2012-13
include the words 'Student Loan' if I have already stated that there isn't a loan and never has been.
The other question is, after four years of doing these returns and being asked to pay "£100" (illustration only) as one lump sum, why am I now being asked to pay the "£100" plus another "£50", to be paid in two installments. Nothing has changed from the previous years and my Husband's business is not a Ltd Co.
I'm sorry if this isn't clear, I'm trying my best, but it's clear my original post wasn't making much sense, yours being the only reply and thanks again. I'm worried that this post won't be any better.0 -
Sounds like the "£50" is a payment on account? They calculate your tax owing as "£100" for Year 1, then they assume Year 2 will be about the same and they want half of that up front, so "£50".0

nomunnofun's response still applies, it'll just be a standard wording to take into account the type of payments that are normally collected through PAYE, it won't change that just because you've said there is no student loan. I'm pretty sure the same thing would have appeared every year that you completed SA.0

There is an income threshold above which payments on account apply, which may be why you haven't had to pay in two instalments before.0

Many thanks, Tiger Eyes and Agrinnall.
I did suspect it was standard wording but wanted to ask the opinion of my betters.
I've bookmarked the link, most helpful, and the explanation of 'payment on account' is making more sense. Thanks again to all.
MSE was my first port of call after the panic died down, I wasn't wrong.:T0 -
No problem. Job done.0

I've just checked my own tax return for 2012/3 (I was on a different computer earlier without access to it) and this, from box 1 of the Tax calculation summary page, seems to be the closest text to what you describe:
Total tax (this may include Student Loan repayment)
and Class 4 NICs due before any payments on account
which clearly says that it may include SL repayment. And box 3 further down the page says Student loan repayment due £0.00. Is the wording on your return different?0 -

Yes but the summary page on - 'view your calculation' shows:
Total tax, Class 4 NIC and Student loan due for 2012-13 £6,
The above example is for a 94 year-old client who owes just over £6K. Definitely no student loan in this instance.0 -
It definately says:
Total tax, Class 4 NIC and Student loan due for 2012-13
As the amount to pay isn't too much more than in previous years and does fit with a small increase in earnings, I'm going with the standard wording approach, especially with the example of Nomunnofun's 94 year old client.
Again, a big thank you to all.0
