    At the bent con rods?

Some mechanics have x-ray vision, Superman-stylee. Or they just 'know'.

If the con rods were bent it would show by the pistons reaching different heights in the bores.

The OP wasn't having the engine stripped |(and hasn't said if they did), so how did the mechanic measure these minute differences in piston height.

With a ruler, or a run out gauge, engineers blue around the top of the cylinder - a whole host of ways. But, the massive dink in the crown of the piston from the valve, that gave sufficient force to bend a con rod would probaly make it unuseable anyway.

All without the mechanic removing the head, this i have to see.

D'oh I must be in early morning mode all day at the moment. I was going on the assumption the head was off, so my bad.

Although it's not beyond the realms of possibility to measure the piston height through the spark plug hole.

Don't, i'm having flashbacks of fingers down plug holes feeling for compression and feeding a welding rod down the same hole trying to find exact TDC...arrgh...NURSE..

The things we used to get up to when we literally didn't have the money to pay someone else to fix our cars.

I remember my Dad having a gadget that screwed into the plug hole of Austin engines that was graduated for TDC, then various degrees before and after. They're probably long gone by now.
