I found several hundred pounds in rolled up £20 notes in a large supermarket (on of the main ones) I handed it in to the Customer Service desk and they seemed amazed that I was handing it in. I got it recorded, and theytook my contact details. Not having heard anything fir several month, I e quired and they confirmed that the money had not been claimed. I therefore asked if it would be given to me, znd they said that their policy was give any money found to charity. I did not even get a choice in the chosen charity.
If found in the street it wiuld have been given to me. Does anyone know if the store acted correctly. Please.

You acted incorrectly, the found money should have been reported directly to the police.
You actually broke the law in not doing so.
I would keep quiet, you could end up in hot water.Be happy...;)0 -
They gave it to their chosen charity !!!!!! . It's not like they spent in on booze and had a party.0

Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -

The cynicism in that creased me up.

I looked into this yesterday. Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theft_by_finding
'cases where the circumstances were held to show no larceny:- (1858) Bell C. C. 27, 169 E. R. 1153 (unmarked notes and purse found in public place)'
No law requires reporting of found objects to the police and you don't have to hand them in, though taking no steps to locate the owner may be prosecutable.
Correct actions would have included informing both the supermarket and local police of the find, and subsequently retaining it should the owner remain unidentified.0 -
Hmmm................. could be digging a hole for myself, but here goes.
I found £200 sticking out of an autobank machine at a supermarket. Without thinking I pulled it out and was left with £200. There was a phone number on the machine 'if you see anything suspicious.' So I phoned them. Take it into the bank they said, its not a bank, well take it into the supermarket.
I handed it to customer services who took my details. My wife was very cynical when I told her, strongly believing it would disappear. A week or so later I got a letter from the supermarket saying it had not been claimed, so they had handed it to the police. A few days later I got a letter from the police, saying they were in receipt of the money and if it was not claimed within a period of time (21 days?) it was mine. After the time was up I received another letter saying to come and collect it.
I went to the police station and the man dug in his safe and handed me the £200. I tried to do the "Look, that money was sticking out of an autobank machine. I used it immediately afterwards. There has to be a way of working out who it belongs to." The policeman said something along the lines of "You've done everything you could have been expected to do. As of now it belongs to you."
I took it, spent it long ago and it was very useful, but I can't help wondering if someone out there missed out, who needed it more than I did.0 -
I would have thought an ATM would not leave money sticking out. Whenever I use them they beep when they return the card and deliver the money. I would have thought they would take both of those back after a short timeout if they weren't collected, and void the transaction in the case of the money.
Either way, if the police said it was yours you can't really argue with that. Sounds like you did the right thing0 -
They do if someone really absent minded walks off and you aren't far behind. I did the same found about £60 hanging out oh and they'd left their card in so a dishonest person could've got more!0

Only if said dishonest person knew the PIN.
