Why would Nominet visit my website?

Now I may just being paranoid here but do Nominet normally visit websites or is it something they only do when someone reports a domain dispute?

    It could be a random check for accuracy of your registration or someone has complained about the accuracy of the whois info.

    If your website (.co.uk) is personal then you can withhold your details in the whois info available publically - but if you have registered as personal and withheld details in whois and the website is a business then that is not allowed.

    Might be a information check. Every year ICANN sends out a reminder to Domain registrars and domain owners to keep their domain name WHOIS details up to date.

    Nominet might do spot checks to make sure details in the WhoIs is the same as the info held with the Domain registrar.

    which reminds me! i gotta check mine...

    Thanks for the advice. I now know it could be random check or someone has reported our domain.

    The site is a personal one. We set it up to tell our story of trying to buy a house through Keepmoat.

    Keepmoat said if we didn't take the site down within 7 days they might take us to court for libel because our site contains "untruths". They also implied that we had committed a crime because their staff might consider contacting the police.

    We took the website down to review it. We believe that everything contained within the site is true so we asked Keepmoat for their version of events and what crime we have committed.

    Since asking this Nominet have been on our site and we are still awaiting a response from Keepmoat.

    So my guess is that they have reported the domain probably for using their company name within it. Or it's just a coincidence, time will tell.

    Thanks for the post on our website.

    I haven't respond on our site as I know Keepmoat's solicitors visit daily. I wouldn't want to give them any ideas by mentioning Nominet on there just in case Keepmoat haven't reported the domain name.

    For now we plan to leave the website as it is. I looked up Nominet's domain dispute process and the defense of fair use can be used against a company claiming an Abusive Registration. It specifically states that;

    "Fair use may include sites operated solely in tribute to or in criticism of a person or business."

    So until we hear anything from Nominet or Keepmoat the site can stay as it is. Especially bearing in mind that rather than deal with our complaint Keepmoat have just tried to sweep it under the carpet.

    Well either that or it is one hell of a coincidence. Or maybe Keepmoat are pretending to be you so as to trick me in to revealing my evil plans!*

    *I don't have any evil plans, well not yet anyway:D
