Baggage cover- not worth the extra

Just wondering what others' opinions/experience is of this?
i recently lost my luggage coming back to the uk (which thankfully was eventually returned), but while waiting i enquired with my insurance company, and basically, unless i could provide valid receipts for anything i was claiming for, i didnt have a hope of claiming anything back!

My guess is that most people when they go for a sun holiday pack accordingly, and probably have the same summer clothes that last for a few trips given the great British weather, and therefor have no receipts.
I probably had approx £3/400 worth of clothes/shoes, along with make up and accesories, and was told that unless i provided receipts i was basically stuffed!
Would it not be better if they had a system where you pay x amount of baggage insurance to cover x amount of value in your case, and if you carry more than the insured value then its tough, you only get back the amount you have insured if the airline can confirm its lost? No quibble, no hassle- or is that too easy?!! Or am i being too naive in expecting something straightforward, and honest people ike myself are paying for others' greed in the past?
Just wondered?!!:rotfl:

Bit confused by your title: Baggage cover- not worth the extra
What is the extra? Usually it's just part of a general travel policy which covers greater losses, medical expenses, or trip cancellation.
While I agree that most of us don't have receipts for the contents of our suitcases, there's a chance you might have for anything of significant value in there...
Our policy says they will replace old with new, so while you won't get many things back, you would presumably get a new whatever it was you had a receipt for.

  • sorry, its not very clear! what i meant i i upgraded from a silver to gold policy for an extra amount which subsequently increased the baggage cover from £300 to £2k.
its just me having a rant really as your avarage holidaymaker only takes clothes and toiletries, make up shoes etc which amount up to a fair bit when all added up-i appreciate that if i had an ipad or laptop then a receipt would be fair enough-i just think that there should be a fairer sort of system when claiming for these basic items albeit with some sort of system, ie pay £10 bag insurance claim £300, pay £20 claim £500-a simple clear system which only comes into play when the airline confirms the bag as officialy lost.:)
  • I think the airline would pay something if they lost the baggage

I try to choose travel insurance without baggage cover and save a few pounds as my Home insurance covers me (as does most peoples i think)
  • I think I would buy the cover for peace of mind more than anything.

Can't imagine how I would feel, if my luggage got lost coming home. Or even worse if it got lost on the way.

Glad to hear everything worked out for you though, bluebird1878.
    I love travelling :A

It would end up with people simply enriching themselves with this type of insurance. If the receipts were not worth keeping or the items are so old that you don't have receipts for it any more, is it really worth insuring?

I've never lost a suitcase in 20 years of flying (touch wood!) but if I did I don't think I would bother claiming on insurance as I never have anything of significant value in there anyway.

Exactly. Unless of course your insurance cover said it would pay you £2k without needing to prove what was in the bag - I'm sure we'd all be claiming that we had lots in there of value...

When you say 'all' I presume you mean the sort of people you know?
    It's not something I'd do

I never have anything of great value either and have not lost anything, ever.
I very rarely take more than a back pack anyway, I would think maybe once in the last 20 holidays trips have I taken a hold bag.
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.
