gaps in floor boards

We would like to stain and varnish our bedroom floor, it looks to have been done round the edges, many years ago before fitted carpets.
the problem is that over the years certain boards have been lifted for radiator pipes and electrics, all of the boards have a bit of shrinkage and where the boards have been lifted the tongue has been removed to get them up leaving a nasty narrow gap, I was thinking of filling it neatly with a
brown decorators mate from a mastic gun:eek: prior to sanding and staining etc.
any better ideas please?

last time i cut thin strips of wood (with a tablesaw) and woodglued then in the gaps, slightly proud of the surface.
Once dry, i used a belt sander to sand flat with existing boards, then sanded entire floor as normal.go on, adopt a greyhound

You could always knock up some home made wood filler, mix sawdust with PVA woodglue to make a paste, use that to fill the gapsLast Cigarette 24/6/090

Yeah I heard of this method before too0 -
the gaps must be very narrow to use only glue and sawdust. Any gap bigger than a 1 or 2 mm will need filled with wood. Any thoughts on this?go on, adopt a greyhound

There are a couple of useful threads on this:

I ended up getting the tape and am reasonably happy with the results although the gap in some places is wider than the tape and elsewhere it does occasionally pop up if it hasn't been pushed down far enough.0
