Letting agents may be brilliant to tenants while rent is being paid on time but I don't think that there is any guarantee they will be equally brilliant at the end of a tenancy.

My opinion of the agents would have fallen considerably after I found that they had lost files of personal information. I think I would have been reluctant to supply them with a copy of the inventory just as an insurance that they don't try anything on. This wouldn't stop me agreeing to any valid deductions from the deposit when the tenancy finishes.
  • No reason to keep the tenancy agreement or DPS materials from them (minus your reference code as noted).

Obviously it would be advantageous to you to say you lost your copy of the inventory. A bit cheeky, but not so unrealistic a scenario that it would sour your relationship with the LA.

Worth keeping the good relationship though. If it had already broken down I'd say charge them a fee for the copies! But no, don't do that :)
