Could it be that there are cats in the new area he feels scared of? I wouldn't encourage him to get into fights with them by forcing him to stay out - he's not just at risk of scratches and abcesses, but of catching some serious conditions like Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). Untreatable conditions which will eventually lead to death through secondary infections.

Not to mention it's far safer than being out and about in the dark, especially with weather like today!

Thanks all it seems normal behaviour then.

He can access the (his) porch via his cat flap, it has a chair in there that he has slept on since being a kitten, (its more of a room than a porch - its a proper part of the house).

We were just concerned as his behavior has changed since we moved.

I think it's just co-incidental but it did no harm to ask. Ours are female, one young one quite old. They both go out in the summer but in winter the older one only goes out occasionally. Both, like all cats, sleep a lot. A cat will sleep for 2/3 of it's life.

You've got a perfectly normal cat there. :)

I think it must be the weather with him, he was desparate to go out at 7 this morning but he was back by 8:30 - its cold and windy. He is now sat on the study window sill with his backside over a storage heater. Probably see a lot of him over the next week as the forecast is poor.

You're spot on there. No matter what anyone tells you cats are smart. :)

They also love heat. One of ours almost lives in the fireplace when the fire's lit. Somebody told me once that it's because they are originally desert animals so they're able to stand great degrees of heat.

Ours spends most of the evening (when the heating is on) with his face pressed into the radiator. We keep telling him he's cooking his brain but you can't shift him away from it.

Both of ours lie against radiators and love lounging on windowsills when the rad's on underneath them. I actually started a thread a while ago about our oldest at the fire though. Here's one of the pics I used.

Years ago I had a beautiful little girl cat that regularly stood so close to the gas fire she singed her fur, we had to get a fire guard to stop her.

She - lol. I have others of her right up in front of it just staring at it or grooming but I haven't transferred them to the PC yet.

I've hear stories of cats sleeping in the ashpans of Aga ranges and coming out every now and then to shake the sparks off burning fur before going back into the ash pan. It must stink. :p

My Lottie's a lazy old lump too - she would happily lie in her basket for 23.5 hours every day. Twice a day my BF tells her she's going to move even if to sit outside on the patio for 5 mins (that's barely all she does in winter).

In summer, she's out for hours in the evening. But for half the year she just wants to hibernate! The house is always warm so I can't blame her. She's burnt herself before by lying against a hot pipe before. Silly cat.

Shame cos my other (newish) cat Morris just wants to play and can't understand why she won't play with him. He sits there batting at her while she growls and hisses with her ears pinned back. I try to tell him and separate them and comfort Lottie, but he just doesn't take a blind bit of notice. Follows her everywhere. Sleeps on the sofa next to her basket even. Just adores her. Wish I could get three (another to keep Morris company), but that's out of the question!
