Traveling to Gatwick Airport From Yorkshire M1 or A1?

I would be inclined to drive down the A1 and then join the M11, go straight down it to join the A12 and then under the Blackwall Tunnel and join the A2 / M2 (The A2 is much quicker to the M25 than the A20) all the way down to the M25 and then clockwise to the M23.

This route will be fine providing you don't hit London after 3pm (or Before 7.30pm) and that you listen out for traffic updates.

I do the reverse route when I drive to Yorkshire from Central London (SE1) which I do fairly frequently.

Traveling down would be on a weekday afternoon, probably hitting M25 around 3-5pm (I know earlier would be better and traveling back would be on a weekday around lunch time.

Personally I'd use the M1. I live in North Yorks and while the A1 is good as far down as the M62 (proper motorway) it's not great from there to the A1(M) around Peterborough. At least the M1 is motorway all the way.
