Buy a 500 watt heater to slash heating costs

We bought a 500 watt fan heater to heat our lounge. Regardless of lounge size, if you sit within about 8 feet of the heater you will be toastie and you can leave it on for 14 hours a day for £1 at current prices (14p per KWH). It has slashed our heating bills by half. We bought a 500 watt PIFCO fan heater for £10 on ebay.

500W is not a lot of heat on a cold day!

Wow. what an amazing suggestion from a newbie. I would ask who the seller is but that would be spamming.
  • In all fairness to the OP we have a wall mounted 200w electric heater in our porch form a BIG DIY chain. In the thick of winter it just gets left on 24/7 and is very effective. Porch is freezing otherwise.

    Cheers

Let's say it takes 10kWh to heat a room to the temp required for x hours. It doesn't matter if you do that by a 0.5kW heater running for 20 hours, or a 2kW heater running for 5 hours. The cost is exactly the same, excluding heat loss. So using a lower power heater does not 'slash your bills', unless you are just using less heat.

I would instead recommend that people invest in one of these. They are a one off cost, have virtually no running costs save for laundry and have the benefit of slowly normalizing your acceptance of lower ambient temperatures thus leading to future savings. It is known as a thermal vest..

    Preferably long sleeved..very cosy..

Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Heh, I always wear jumpers indoors except during the summer and it lets me have my thermostat on ~17 °C comfortably. Also a good idea to invest in thick socks and/or slippers!
