Nope. I don't have any standing orders or direct debits on this account. I've purely used this account for cash withdrawals.

A paid item fee would relate to SOs, DDs and/or cheques. If you don't have SOs or DDs, then it's likely to be cheques.

Your monthly statements will detail exactly when the charges started and what they were for, and you will also see which transaction(s) initially made you overdrawn.

Did you allow for the charges that apply to cash withdrawals abroad?

BTW, how did you know how much money you had in the account if you didn't check your statements at least monthly?
  • Have you asked Nationwide?

Do you have the actual statements in front of you for the time period June - November 2013?

Nope. But of course either going to go in branch or call later today - it's a toss up over which one will be the most successful - as the senior bank personnel are usually hiding out back or 'busy' and the clerks can be hit and miss.

Yes, I have checked through them all and I've been in credit since (allegedly) being overdrawn by 0.30 pence way back in March 2012.

    call later today
If my bank had relieved me of £150 (and more in years gone by) I'd be calling them now*, being as they're open 24 hours a day according the their website's contact us section.

    * Well I wouldn't actually, I'd have been calling them 2 hours ago rather than posting on here to see if anyone else had experienced the same issue!

Have you found the free-phone number? ;)

You appear to have been charged over five months, ie since July, but don't seem to have looked at your online statements to establish what put your account into the red and how it happened.
  • Doesn't sound like foul (or fowl) play to me.

Why not send a message from online banking (just outlining the facts). They often reply within a day.

I only ever use the freephone number to contact Nationwide.

Has anyone else been ripped off by The Nationwide for 'paid item fees' at £15 a shot? In addition to 'unauthorised overdraft' fees at £20 a time.
I haven't, but I don't have any accounts with them.
This year I have stayed in the UK and recently received a bank statement from the Nationwide for Novermber which has charges of £75 for (5) paid item fees and then £100 for (5) unauthorised overdraft charges - putting my account over £150 in the red.
The thing is, I haven't even used this account since June and it's been £18 in credit since then.
The key is to work out what triggered the charges. What was the balance at that point in time.
I normally return abroad every October, so I can only think that the Nationwide are up to their dirty tricks thinking that I'm abroad without the usual banking access to my statements etc. so have tried to pull a fast one, as the charges make absolutely no sense.
If you really think they have a bald man somewhere in Swindon monitoring your account with a view to presonally screwing you, I think you're paranoid.
Since seeing this statement (Nov 2013) I have checked previous statements from the past couple of years and seen that I have unknowingly been hit with these kinds of charges before and VERY suspiciously - the dates of these charges seem to have been taken out the day BEFORE (they say) I had money going into my account. Again this seems like fowl play as I have always checked my balance before drawing any funds abroad to make sure any transactions have gone through and have often waited until several days later.
Certain transactions may not update in real time.
Has this kind of thing happened to anyone else? Just wondering where I stand, obviously I'm going to complain about ALL the charges.
Complain by all means. But calm it down. Strip out the emotion. Seek to understand the facts then approach your complaint calmly.
Either way it just seems like an outright dirty disgraceful con.
Scam. Rip-off. Con. Great words. They mean !!!! all.

Understand the facts. Then you can complain from a point of strength. Prattle on as you have in this post and you will merely irritate the person you complain to and make little progress.

Did you go into your local branch or do this via phone?

Neither, I sent them a message via internet banking.
