um - this sounds a bit strange but my youngest was a bit of a 'mad hatter' and when we came home from school he was awful - until I hit on the idea of a small detour to the local kids playground - fifteen minutes of running himself ragged helped him to calm down and teatime from then on was quite peaceful! cant see why that couldn't work with hyperactive dogs too!

I initially read that as you letting your dog loose in the kids playground, and I was thinking "yep, that'll go down well after the latest bout of killer dog hysteria." :rotfl:
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

roflmao - NO, my youngest SON!!!!!!!!!!! oh dear - I am sitting here laffing like a loon now!
especially as I used to take the staffy to meet him from school and she was just as mad as he was in the playground! which was nearly always deserted btw as most kids were at home having their tea! and my older two just enjoyed a half hour of peace and quiet at home!
  • If the agility class is anything like mine then it could really help his focus. We had about 4 classes before we even went near any equipment as they were working on getting the dogs to focus on us and obey hand commands. Then the equipment has been introduced really gradually to make sure you have control of your dog and to make sure they don't just go hurtling round and injure themselves.

With LS we are doing it all on-lead at the moment as his focus is a bit hit and miss if the other dogs are too close. But he does have a lot of self-control when he is focusing on the equipment.

I would say it has helped him in his basic obedience as he has a very good 'watch me' now and also a pretty good 'stay' and 'come'.

And if all else fails you can always film it and be very MSE and send it off to You've Been Framed!
  • My sons the same meri, if he's had a busy day, he's in his wee bed and out for the count by 8pm, none of the usual 'WATCH ME DO A FRONT ROLL ON THE BED 50,000 TIMES' malarkey.

Shadow is growing to be a really lovely dog. The nipping and humping are very nearly a distant memory, the thump of her tail is truly one of the loveliest things you could hear.

The vet who said about dominance was talking out if her hat, watching her tonight and the trainers comments told me what I think I already knew. We did a heel walk and a recall off leash (nothing at all to do with the bit if sausage in my mitt....) when the puppy play got too much, she took off to the water bowl and chose dogs to play with that weren't the most OTT and on the whole behaved beautifully.

The trainer brought one of her own full grown dogs as a stooge and one or two of the very naughty pups got a wee telling off. This was the trainers way of getting puppies to interact with adult dogs and learn manners as the puppy by ball window is getting smaller for them. She came over and said shadow didn't get a telling off because she didn't need it!

Sorry Elsien, totally went off into one there and derailed your post! Back to you - try it once, if it's not for gitdog (or you!) then that will be that. As meritaten says, burning off excess energy will be a great thing and that coupled with structure could be a fab thing!
