just make sure its got a hardware mpeg-2 chip on it as that will drastically reduce the strain on your cpu whilst recording footage.0

I use a Hauppauge PVR-150 permanently at home.
The composite input on it is wired from my freeview box - as the signal picked up by the tv-tuner is dreadful.
I have tv-output on my graphics card going back to my tv.. so I can pause/rewind..etc live tv without paying Murdoch a monthly fee for the benefit.
I'll warn you now - Hauppauge's supplied software is terrible - but once you get the drivers working right (their cards are sometimes picky about which PCI slot it goes in), theres plenty of different software you can use for capturing.
Brilliant picture quality on recordings. I spent months thinking it was bad, then realised it was actually my pc playing it back badly.. burn the recording to a dvd and its superb. A lot of pcs seem to struggle playing back full screen mpeg2 video....but it will all look fine on a standalone dvd player.
The PVR-150 is still available I think.. and it has the mpeg2 encoder chip in it so the pc that does is one of the early Athlons with minimum ram.0
