Been renting with my girlfriend the last 2 years and we've split up.
I REAALLY dont want to go back to living with parents but can't see how I can afford to live alone without going into some sort of shared accomodation with people... Does anyone out there live alone just now? How on earth do you afford it?

I did after I split with an ex.
I afforded it through working all the overtime hours I could physically achieve, and LHA, living in the South East I was paying £700 a month on rent, £90 on council tax, for a small 1 bed flat. It was absolutely horrendous, I did it for 8 months before I decided I was better moving back to my parents in the North West. My furniture is all in storage until I have my debts cleared and can move out again but at least in this area I can afford to rent a small house instead of a flat. It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

Move to a less desirable area where rents are cheaper? That's what I did when I lived alone. It enabled me to move out from shared accommodation without increasing the rent by much.0

I don't know many people who can afford to live alone, sorry.
You just have to decide whether being in a relationship is worse than having flatmates stealing your milk and creeping into your room to touch your hair when you are asleep, and move on from there.0 -
It's expensive, been doing it for five years. I think you need to be earning 18-20k to be reasonably comfortable. Although I'm sure others have to manage on less.0

OP is probably better off working part time and claim DSS providing he / she lives in the UK, is over 25 years old and landlord accepts DSS method of payment.
OR
OP may have to move back home on the condition that he / she can no longer afford his / her rented property.
OP is likely to struggle financially, mentally and physically is he / she tries to work many hours to meet tight payment dead lines. Until the following, 1 OP meets new partner. In which case OP is likely to rush in to new and unsecured relationships.
OP may have to move in with parents, although OP does not desire this option, however OP will have better chance to save up and buy his / her own property and by that time may have a decent relationship on the right terms also.0 -

Well loads of people afford it. Not everyone can. Surely depends on your income and where you live!0 -
Have you still got a joint tenancy agreement with your EX girlfriend?
Is she still living in the flat/house? Any kids involved?0 -
Depends which is most livable for you your parents or a small studio or sharing.
You can share with just 1 or 2 others, maybe look to be someone's lodger short term to decide what you want without commiting yourself to 6 months in a place you're not sure you can afford.0
