Can you take ill health retirement and redundancy at the same time?

I am looking to retire form my teaching job due to ill health. I have started the process for this and awaiting the necessary information from various sources.
I work at a college and we have under gone a revamp through various departments, and in turn this as cause department to lay staff off or to take voluntary redundancy.
I have just received a letter from HR to say that my department is being put into a redundancy pool and that there will be a lot of job losses within my department.
What I would like to know can you take ill health retirement and still be considered for voluntary redundancy?

  • Depending how many years you have been in your job, I would apply for voluntary redundancy, you may not be selected though. It would be a good idea to discuss the situation with your HR department.
  • Hi have been in the job for seven years, but not sure if I would be entitled to both benefits?

I just don't think my work place is forth coming with information about staff rights and I don't want to be seen off, for something I am entitled to.

    Thanks for replying

I'd have thought the answer was 'no'; on the basis that, having taken ill health retirement, you are no longer employed, and therefore the issue of redundancy does not apply.

My employer retired me at 49 after a stroke, I didn't have to apply to go under ill health.

When I got the ill health pension itl was enhanced, and I was also paid a "severence" payment....they seemed very careful to state that it was a "severence" payment...redundancy was not mentioned at any time.

So it is possible to go with a pension and a payment, but as I say redundancy was not in the mix.

if your retirement takes places before the end of the time when the redundancy is needed, then your ill health retirement would be one less job loss that had to be made through redundancy.

This would be part of the natural turnover that reduces compulsory redundancy.

In my organisation if early retirement is granted due to redundancy then redundancy 'compensation' is offset against the cost of the early pension. The closer that someone is to normal retiremnt age the greater the chance of some balance of the redundancy being left. Usually it is all used up.

Depending on the rules you might be able to take ill-health retirement as a deferred member after being made redundant.
