Before spending any money, make sure you're not fighting with your neighbours for wireless bandwidth.
There are 13 (or 14?) wireless 'channels' that you can use. Similar to radio stations, if signals are too close, they can interfere with each other. You want to TRY to be 3 channels away from another one.
If you've got an Andriod or iOS device, download WiFi Analyzer (sorry for the American spelling) which will show you the WiFi networks around you, their strength, and channel. Try to find a gap.
You can then log into your router, and tell it what WiFi channel to use, usually under Wireless Settings or similar. No setup needed on any of the WiFi devices connected to it.
Could you provide a link so I get the correct one?

You can use 'inSSIDer for home' which will work on your laptop, obviously your laptop needs to be able to receive a wireless signal for it to work.
This sounds similar to the app that almillar was suggesting.
Here is the link to inSSIDer http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/
Download the home version which is free to use
I use it when fixing problems or setting up wireless connections, as like almillar said it allows you to check who is using what around you and then avoid any conflicts.
The software gives you lots of information about all the wireless signals it finds, so is great for diagnosing potential trouble areas.0 -
I have that very box, for my Smart TV, PVR, media player and NAS. Works flawlessly, though you might want to tape over the LEDs - they're a bit brightThanks Kes,the 5 port switch looks exactly what I need.
Someone else however says this one would be good

What do you reckon?

I don't think you've mentioned whether you're on iOS or Android gord, and I just found that my Dad was unable to find WiFi Analyzer on the iOS App Store on his iPad - there are plenty of similar apps though, as Kes says. If you're on Android, here's WiFi Analyzer.

Er,no idea,Tvs are Samsung and Panasonic,laptop is Sony .0 -
The apps people are mentioning to check WiFi channels in use run either on a PC (inssider) or a tablet/smartphone (wifi analyzer) so you probably need to chose inssider and run it on your laptop.
Although there are 13 Wifi channels selectable they all overlap to some degree and there are only 3 non-overlapping channels 1,6, and 11.0 -

If they ALL overlap to some degree (to a channel either side)... there can't be any that are non-overlapping!0 -
they only overlap if there is something to overlap with ie another router, the overlap is upto 5 channels - 1, 6, 11 don't overlap with each other, which is why they are used as defaults.
Why can't you move the router downstairs, simplest solution.!!

Because my son has his pc, playstation and xbox connected to it.0 -
gord, sorry, when I said Android or iOS, I meant your mobile phone (or tablet). You can install the above app, and carry them around the house with you to see the signal strength, and channel, of your, and your neighbours', routers.
If your son's Playstation is a Playstation 3, he has WiFi built in. His PC can go WiFi very cheaply, and the XBox (360?) MIGHT have WiFi too. Then you could move the router downstairs. Your son might complain about lag though...0
