No mayo prawn cocktail?

Its my first Christmas that I'm cooking for this year & I really want to make a prawn cocktail for starters but my guest doesn't eat mayonnaise can anyone please suggest a mayo free recipe?

Thanks

  • You could make a light sald dressing with olive oil, vinegar/lemon juice & herbs, or use natural yoghurt or creme fraiche instead of the mayo - if they like any of those...?

I Nigella's recipe uses just salad cream, and it's delicious.

Thanks both - unfortunately salad cream is seen in the same way as mayo however the natural yoghurt idea is good. I once made him a potato salad with yoghurt & it was eaten.

  • If the guest doesn't rally like salad cream or mayo then i would make them something else and have the prawn cocktail yourself.

Perhaps they could have spicy prawns on a bed of lettuce etc.

Prawn don't go very well with yogurt or cream. It will work with southern island dressing, which is based on mayonnaise. How about serving it like they do in Texas - just cooked prawn with salad leaves as decoration (you could make big ones and put prawns on), on the table 3 dips - salsa, cream and guacamole. (Salsa - the best - Old El passo or Discovery)

Sweet chilli dipping sauce ...... They will love you for it even if they are completely and utterly weird for not loving mayo  :rotfl:
    Ant.
  • Could you just have a squeeze of lemon over their prawns? I'm sure I've had it quite plain like that before, almost prefer it to having lots of sauce.
