Just to make it clear, I will pay the rent now I have contact details for him again.
My concerns for my new tenancy are that the reference will ask if rent has always been on time and he will simply say no. Yes, that is good. You need to check and reconfirm that it is still protected.Deposit is in a scheme. Is that a good thing?
If it is protected, then you will have access to dispute resolution services, which, while not perfect, are better than trying to extract the money from the Landlord.
So, no valid reason to withhold rent at this point. As the tenancy is now Statutory Periodic, you need to give 1 full month's notice to end at the end of a tenancy month to leave.You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'0 -

I am surprised you did not read through that in full and follow the advice to contact the lender who is seeking repo and ask for 2 months security - which is something you can also apply to the court for.
Just to be clear, I did follow that advice. I contacted the legal team representing the mortgage company and liaised with them all the way through regarding where the hearing was up to. For now that hearing is adjourned. Had it not been I would of course have asked for the 2 months security.
The issue now is I can't continue to live with my child in this constant state of worry that the hearing could be restored at any time and the repossession could go ahead, forcing us to move quickly.

At least you are in an SPT and only need to give 1 period's notice to leave.0

What is your rental period as that dictates the end date for your periodic contract?If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0
