You choose long vs short on your own money
    not the states

I claim less per month than what I used to pay in tax per month in my last, much better paid job.

I've helped to support others, now I need a little help. Times change.

You misunderstand - benefits are there as a last resort, not a lifestyle choice. You do not need help if you have work available to you. The tax you paid in the past is irrelevant, it does not go into a savings account for you to draw on at a later date.

Helpful. I can understand others having an opinion but making fun of someone who asks for help on a serious matter?

I'm not one to ponce off the state. I was once out of work for nearly a year when the rescession started and never claimed anything due to pride. A few years later and When you have children to feed pride needs to take a back seat.

    Each to their own.

I didn't mean to make fun of you but you must see that turning down the chance to earn more so that you can claim more benefits isn't really something that's desirable.
