Import Duty & VAT

Options
I have been charged £146.06 for a coat purchased from the U.S.A.

How can I check that this amount is correct?

I have been to numerous websites including HM Customs etc but the catagories and calculations are so complex its impossible to calculate.

Just for info the coat was $600.00

I just want to check that our government have got their sums correct

thanks

Part of the Furniture 1,000 Posts Name Dropper
    $600 = £365 approximately.

    Shipping would have been $50? / £30

    So £395 in total.

    20% VAT = £79 to begin with...

As for the rest, who imported it, how much of that amount is made up of their fee, what is the coat made of and how is it finished? This will reflect the duties owed on the clothing itself.

    This might help:
    http://www.dutycalculator.com/new-import-duty-and-tax-calculation

(but you may also be paying fees to the delivery company if they have had to sort out all the paperwork for you)
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

I just tried the above website (which was found by googling import duty calculator) and said the coat was a man made parka and shipping was $50, with $1 insurance.
    Result:
    Total customs value: £396.38
This is the amount that customs values your import at Duty: £47.57 - VAT: £88.79
Total import duty & taxes due: £136.35
    Total landed cost: £532.73

So import costs of £146 are in the right ballpark

  • Thanks WTFH I got as far as the material of the coat and the 8? digit code that was associated with it but could not figure out where to go from that point.
    thanks again
