Defaults and missed payments

Is there any way of getting rid of missed payments on your credit file ?
I lost my 40k per year job in March 2011 and I had just started a business but it was going to take time. So that I did not miss payments I was advised to go on a payment plan..which I did through Smooth Financial. They unfortunately took the money from customers and were not paying the payments through to the creditors. Even though this has happened the payment plan was not worth the paper it was written on and I still received defaults etc.
I have subsequently paid everything off in full.. have not tried to settle with anyone .. just paid what I had borrowed in full however, now.. as my business is doing REALLY well.. we need to move to a new house to be able to help us grow and I am unable to get a mortgage, credit card.. lease car.. nothing ! So even though everything is settled in full.. I am being advised this will take me 6 years to disappear from my file !!

Just to add.. I have never missed a mortgage payment EVER. Always paid on time. My new mortgage adviser has given us a rate of 4.75% which I think is a little steep for the current bank of england base rate0
