This is certainly not a water softener. They are supposed to work by keeping the magnesium and calcium salts in suspension rather than allowing them to deposit on heating elements etc. There is a lot of scepticism as to there effectiveness which I suspect is well founded. I think the only real answer to hard water is a water softener.
It took us 30 years to take the step and install a water softener and I only wish we had done it 30 years earlier.0
