Working breaks

Son has got a job at a large sandwich chain and he has been told he gets a twenty minute break if he works over 6 hours no matter how long so he will have to work 10.5 hours with a twenty minute break is this really the law.

Yeah the laws states you have to take 20 mins break for any work done over the 6 hours and it has to be taken in the middle of the shift - not at the beginning or end.

10.5 hours worked would still only give 20 mins in that case and its legal.

Basically he either has to get on with it and go with their rules or look for somewhere else to work (which admittedly is easier said than done).
I hope he finds somewhere that treats their staff better.

And he is on a 0 hour contract so we don't know when he is working beyond the next few days.

If he is under 18 there are different rules that apply.

Thanks but he is 22 so he will have to suck it up.

Under 18's I think are covered by a different part of the law I think it does include different and longer break requirements.

When in retail I got 2 x 15 mins paid breaks for tea break and 1 hour lunch unpaid

When I went into an office it was just 1 hour unpaid.

Any company can offer what they like over the 20 mins.
