Which music/tech magazines for a 14/15-yr-old boy?

Options
OK, long story...

I work in an international school teaching English as a first language. However, most of my students don't *actually* have English as their first native language - they've just worked long and hard to get it to that level and are still working on it, as there can still be aspects of English that they struggle with.

During a recent parents' evening, I had a parent come to me concerned about getting her teenage son to read more in English. She wants him to read more music/technology magazines in English as those are his interests, but has no idea where to start and so has sought my help. The problem is that despite teaching them I know little to nothing about 14/15-year-old boys :o

So now I seek your help with this one! Has anyone here got a 14/15-year-old son who reads these types of magazines? Which ones? I would love to be able to supply this boy's mother with a list :)

Thanks in advance for all your help :)

Did she not say what sort of music or tech he likes? Getting a teen a magazine for a genre of music he does not like won't go down well!

^^ now that's a good suggestion - I know the lad does play guitar so maybe that narrows it down a bit?! Will try to quiz him a bit in a non-creepy way next lesson :p

I love Wired, which isn't in any way aimed at kids but has a range of technology and other futurological type stuff. It's really good on design as well, both in how the magazine is laid out and in the content of articles. Subscriptions are about £25pa.

Music - depends on what the child likes, but there's NME, Rolling Stone etc for general stuff and then specialist stuff for different genres like MixMag.

Edit: remember, at 14/15 child probably isn't too bothered about stuff focused at 'young people'!

How about Q, NME, or Kerrang?

I'd say Kerrang is probably good for a boy who isn't a confident reader - some of the others might have too much text on the page.

My secret vice is reading Stuff magazine, because it is all about the latest gadgets, but it isn't really teen-orientated.

For teccy stuff my son (who is 12 and very advance on reading and teccy stuff), loves Computer Active Its a fortnightly magazine, posts internationally and has trial subscriptions 3 for £3 or 6 for £6
I must add that there is always a queue of family members from grandad to cousins to read it after him
  • Focus magazine is pretty good for teenagers.

For music, maybe the NME or Q
