Your right, it wont be, it'll simply be insanely busy rather than hell on earth that'll be at the weekends.
Always worth checking maps (not tube maps) about where you want to go. Many things are much closer together than people think and are easily walkable - often about the same time as the tube when you consider queues, barriers, walking between platforms etc - and obviously you get to see much more.
As a country bumpkin you evidently want to see the highlights but arguably most the best bits are the smaller things that tend to be off the main tourist drags0 -
