Southern Electric issues

I used the Energy Club on here to start the switch to Southern Electric. Everything was going well till I received a letter from them saying I had the wrong type of meter and my previous supplier (Scottish Power) hadn't registered it properly when it was changed. I contacted Scottish Power who said this wasn't the case and turned out to be right. I told Southern Electric this and said I wanted to carry on with the application. I was amazed to be told this couldn't be done unless I re-applied again, I explained to them that I was surprised that in this competitive market I was being asked to do everything again and was told there was nothing that could be done and the only way possible was for me to phone back the next (saturday) morning and spend half an hour with someone on the phone.
As you can imagine I told them I wouldn't be bothering if this was the case. Two weeks later I have received a letter from there complaints department explaining what happened and asking me to contact them on a phone number that doesn't work and the email address they supplied bounces back as non-existent. Why are these companies such clueless morons? Luckily Co-Op energy came back with a better price in my new search so heres hoping they are more use.
